Freethought Advice Columnist Shares Some of Her ‘Sweet Reason’

Atheists United hosted San Francisco resident and "Sweet Reason" columnist Molleen Matsumura at the April lecture at CFI/West. She shared several stories and letters that she has received since becoming the first freethought advice columnist for the Institute of Humanist Studies' Humanist Network News e-zine four years ago.

AAI Puts Out the Call for Volunteers

On May 14th, members of Atheists United gathered upstairs at CFI West for the 2008 AAI Convention Volunteer Kick-Off Meeting led by Margaret Downey, President of Atheists Alliance International.
On the agenda was coordinating the need for volunteers for the upcoming convention, titled "Unsinkable Atheism," and hosted at the Queen Mary in Long Beach, CA, scheduled for September 25 - 28.

Dr. Vijayam Visits Two AU Chapters

Two of our AU chapters had the treat of hosting Dr. Goparaju Vijayam, Executive Director of the Atheist
Centre of India, in June. Dr. Vijayam was touring the United States throughout the month following his speech at the 2008 IHEU Convention in Washington, DC.  He came through California the last week of the month and spoke at our AU San Fernando Valley group meeting as well as at our newest chapter in Anaheim/Buena Park. Dr. Vijayam gave excerpts of his IHEU speech and talked about the rampant superstition among the rural Indian community that his Atheist Centre works to overcome.

Inland Empire Atheists Reach 200

In the month of July, the Inland Empire chapter of Atheists United crossed a significant benchmark, their MeetUp.com group reached 200 members. The long-standing group, which meets at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Riverside, CA, has been established 6 years, but has seen their most significant membership jump after a fortuitous news article and creating profile on MeetUp.com in August of 2006 which allowed the Inland Empire Atheists to become searchable on Google.
