Atheists Dis Comfort
Atheists United is getting fundraising help from Christian evangelist Ray Comfort. Comfort, who has argued that bananas give atheists nightmares, has now gone further, erecting a billboard on the 105 Freeway in Los Angeles asking people to "Pull the plug on atheism."
Organization president Bobbie Kirkhart said, "We want Comfort to know that disagreement is one thing, but an attack on our right to exist and to speak out is something else. A person could easily read this as advocating our death."
The organization is sending e-mails, headed "Tell Comfort He's Bananas!" promising to send a postcard to Comfort on behalf of every person who donates of $5.00 or more to Atheists United. The postcards will say:
Dear Ray,
I'm sorry that my existence makes you unCOMFORTable but I think you've gone bananas! Your primitive ideas don't worry me, but your attack on reason and the reasonable does. I am proud to have evolved. Your billboard inspired me to make a donation to Atheists United in your honor.
Donors may add a personal message to the post cards.
"Early response is positive," said communications director Brian Parra. "I want Mr. Comfort to know that attacking atheists like this is only going to support atheism."
The details of the campaign are posted on the organization's web site: http://atheistsunited.org/.
