The members of Atheists United join people everywhere in mourning the violent death of Dr. George Tiller. Dr. Tiller's work in doing necessary late-term abortions showed courage and compassion, traits he likely attributed to his Christian faith. The suspect in this case drove a car with a Christian fish and also no doubt saw this crime as a religious duty. The role of faith in this tragedy underscores the need for all people to become responsible for their own moral choices and not attribute them to a god. The suspect in this case was no doubt encouraged by such religious groups as Operation Rescue, whose founder, amazingly found little sympathy for Dr. Tiller, whom he called a "mass murderer." "I believe that many of the anti-abortion people who have stated regret for this crime are sincere," Bobbie Kirkhart, President of Atheists United said.
