Atheists United gave out $78,000 in free food last year

We just received paperwork documenting how much food we ordered from L.A. Food Bank to give away at our monthly food distribution in 2025, and the numbers are impressive.

Atheists United distributed 480,000 pounds of food last year, worth $78,000.

This food was provided mostly free by L.A. Food Bank as a participant in their distribution program. (Some food is purchased by Atheists United directly when food bank supplies are low.) Atheists United volunteers rent a U-Haul each month to pick this food up from L.A. Food Bank, which is sorted into kits at our our office in LA’s historic Filipinotown. Kits contain several pounds of fresh produce, proteins, bread, and various contributions that often come as a surprise fo volunteers, who must improvise a plan to distribute them.

About 15-25 volunteers each month perform all the necessary labor (as well as the calculations and customer service necessary to make sure food is distributed equitably) on the third Friday of every month. In March, we served 159 families, impacting 549 people.

Atheists United hopes to expand by adding a second food distribution in 2027 if fundraising goals can be met.
