San Fernando Valley Atheists United - Virtual Discussion Meetup

YOU MUST REGISTER ON MEETUP IN ADVANCE TO BE ADMITTED TO THE ZOOM MEETING.

San Fernando Valley Atheists United is a volunteer-led subgroup that hosts virtual dicussion meetings every 1st Monday.

🛑What to expect:

Discussion sparked by short videos about atheism, religion, science, current events, critical thinking, comedy, life hacks, health, and beyond >>> followed by moderated discussions.

🛑Meeting format:

This is a place for atheists to meet, have dinner with each other (eating on camera is ok), and network with fellow atheists, skeptics, and humanists.

A few agnostics and religious people sometimes show up and participate and they are welcome as long as they leave the dogma and proselytizing at home.

We mandate courtesy and respect to fellow attendees. First and foremost, this is a social gathering and support group for like-minded persons, not a debate club. If you're coming just to argue on matters of religion or politics, don't bother showing up, you're not going to convert anyone, and you will be asked to leave.

🛑Details:

This is a 2-hour event, but often we go overtime when the discussion and the great atmosphere it requires; or when we can't get enough of seeing familiar faces and perhaps some new ones. Feel free to stay as long or as short as you'd like.

Look out for topics posted in the discussion section and please place your own ideas, questions, or concerns in the comments and please feel free to private message any of our co-organizers by clicking on their names.

We welcome your unique point of view and add to the discussion.

Recovering from Religion Support Group

The Los Angeles area Recovering From Religion support group will meet the FIRST TUESDAY of each month at 7 PM, virtually via Zoom.

RSVP to view the Zoom link to the meeting.

The primary focus of a Recovering From Religion support group is to provide ongoing and personal support to individuals as they let go of their religious beliefs. This transitional period is an ongoing process that can result in a range of emotions, as well as a ripple effect of consequences throughout an individual’s life. As such, the support meetings are safe and anonymous places to express these doubts, fears, and experiences without biased feedback or proselytizing. Attendees are encouraged to share, when they are comfortable doing so.

We are here to help each other through this journey.
There is no cost to attend this support group but, if you feel so inclined, donations can be made at www.recoveringfromreligion.org/donate

If you find you need to talk with someone before the meeting date, RfR has a hotline and online chat for that express purpose. Call (844) 368-2848 to speak with someone. Go to www.recoveringfromreligion.org and click on the green chat bubble in the lower left corner of the site to chat online.

If you are in need of professional help, we can offer the Secular Therapy Project to provide options to connect with a professional therapist. All therapists have been thoroughly vetted by our organization and offer only evidence-based and non-religious treatment. Connect with them at www.seculartherapy.org.

For others, SMART is helpful primarily because they learn new ways of thinking about themselves and their behavior.

Although we have science-based ideas for you to consider, no one will tell you what to do. At Atheists United, we understand better than anyone the importance of creating a safe, secular space for people to explore their ideas, identities, and values. Youth should be celebrated, not shamed, for asking honest questions. That’s what Secular Youth Group is all about.

According the US Secular Survey:

  • 15% lower rate of depression among youth active in a local secular community

  • More than a third of secular youth had negative experiences with family due to their nonreligious identity

  • One third of secular youth had negative experience in education due to their nonreligious identity

  • Nearly 50% of young people are religiously unaffiliated

  • Please dress according to the weather (it gets very hot in the summer months!)

Other Notes:

Change myself, change the world…

SMART Recovery® (Self Management And Recovery Training) helps individuals gain independence from addictive substances and activities.

Welcome to our community! Our discussions are based on scientific knowledge and evolve as scientific knowledge evolves. SMART is helpful for some participants primarily because they become involved with a new community of helpful and friendly people. For others, SMART is helpful primarily because they learn new ways of thinking about themselves and their behavior.

Although we have science-based ideas for you to consider, no one will tell you what to do. Our slogan is “Discover the Power of Choice.” For many SMART is a combination of a new community and new ways of thinking. You can be involved with SMART in whatever way you want to. We look forward to your participation.

Where curiosity is celebrated

At Atheists United, we understand better than anyone the importance of creating a safe, secular space for people to explore their ideas, identities, and values. Youth should be celebrated, not shamed, for asking honest questions. That’s what Secular Youth Group is all about.

According the US Secular Survey:

  • 15% lower rate of depression among youth active in a local secular community

  • More than a third of secular youth had negative experiences with family due to their nonreligious identity

  • One third of secular youth had negative experience in education due to their nonreligious identity

  • Nearly 50% of young people are religiously unaffiliated

Recovering from Religion Support Group

San Fernando Valley Meetup

San Fernando Valley Meetup

YOU MUST RSVP ON MEETUP.COM

Our Meetup is hosted on the 3rd Thursday evening of the month at a local restaurant. All are welcome!

🛑What to expect:

An open discussion about religion/atheism and more.

🛑Meeting format:

This is a place for atheists to meet, have dinner with each other and network with fellow atheists, skeptics, and humanists.

🛑Details:

This is a 2-hour event, but often we go overtime.

Our slogan is “Discover the Power of Choice.” For many SMART is a combination of a new community and new ways of thinking. You can be involved with SMART in whatever way you want to. We look forward to your participation.

Reimagining America Summit

What would it mean to truly Reimagine America?

Timed to coincide with Juneteenth and the 250th anniversary of July 4th, Reimagining America invites participants to reflect on the nation’s founding promises as well as the ongoing work of true liberty for all.

This gathering brings together leaders, activists, scholars, and community members of all ages for thoughtful conversations about the future of our shared civic life. Through panels on education, local government, reflective activism, and religious pluralism, participants will explore how we can strengthen institutions, deepen participation, and build a more just and inclusive society.

Grounded in honest reflection and creative possibility, the conference is a space to ask bold questions and imagine new paths forward.

The gathering will conclude with music and comedy, reminding us that art, laughter, and shared joy are also essential to a healthy America.

Together, we will explore what a more hopeful American future could look like.

This event is being organized with love by Pacific Unitarian Universalist Church, American Atheists, and Atheists United

Pacific Unitarian Church will host Unitarian Universalist worship services on the following day, Sunday, the 21st at 10:30, followed by a brunch.

Atheists United will host a unique Science Sunday trip on the 21st, to the world-famous Mount Wilson Observatory! Ticket holders will get a docent-led tour of grounds and then have 6-hours to look through the 60-inch telescope used by Hubble, Baade, and Sandage to unravel secrets of the stars.

San Fernando Valley Meetup

YOU MUST RSVP ON MEETUP.COM

Our Meetup is hosted on the 3rd Thursday evening of the month at a local restaurant. All are welcome!

🛑What to expect:

An open discussion about religion/atheism and more.

🛑Meeting format:

This is a place for atheists to meet, have dinner with each other and network with fellow atheists, skeptics, and humanists.

🛑Details:

This is a 2-hour event, but often we go overtime. Feel free to stay as long or as short as you'd like. Look out for topics posted in the discussion section and please place your own ideas, questions, or concerns in the comments and please feel free to private message any of our co-organizers by clicking on their names. We welcome your unique point of view and add to the discussion.

"Infidel" Art Exhibition Reception

Great movements need more than ideas. They need art to connect, motivate, and bring people together.

That’s why Atheists United is proud to offer an artist in our community the materials, space, and inspiration for Infidel: a unique art installation. You’re invited to our opening reception this weekend.

Join us Sunday, June 7th at 5pm for wine, snacks, and opportunities to paint your own art on recycled religious signage.

From Propaganda to Proof: The Occupation of Public Space

"Infidel" focuses on the unauthorized intrusion into the social sphere by tens of thousands of religious propaganda signs, predominantly Christ–centric, posted on US highways, overpasses, and telephone poles. Erhan Us defines these metal and plastic placards not merely as expressions of faith, but as ideological attempts to seize public space; gears in a larger propaganda machine that normalizes religious authority through constant repetition.

The works in the exhibition were made possible through the direct interventions of the Atheist Street Pirates, a civil and secular counter–offensive initiative founded in 2021 under the umbrella of Atheists United in Los Angeles. By removing over 6,000 of these signs from public streets and donating hundreds to the artist, the group provided the raw material to transform propaganda into a contemporary art project.

Featuring the original signs alongside their manipulated counterparts, the installations challenge viewers to move back and forth along the axis of belief and disbelief, questioning what is real. The exhibition prompts critical inquiries: Who shapes our public spaces? Which messages are permitted to occupy them, and who do these spaces truly belong to?

The artist summarizes the core philosophy of the project in his exhibition text: "These remnants are no longer tools of propaganda. They are now evidence. They are the physical traces, torn from public spaces, of how those guided by religion view themselves as superior to the rest of society. For if spaces belong to whichever ideology screams the loudest, the demagogues and manipulators will always win."

About the Artist

Born in Ankara in 1987, conceptual artist and writer Erhan Us is recognized for his multifaceted career spanning the international art world, academia, and communications. He holds undergraduate degrees in TH Management, Sociology, and Philosophy from Bilkent, Istanbul, and Anadolu Universities, and received his Master of Fine Arts [MFA] in Multidisciplinary Art from the prestigious Maryland Institute College of Art [MICA].

As the CEO of A.D. 1644 Marketing Group, Us has led pioneering marketing projects that garnered "Best Digital & Strategic Agency" accolades. He has served as president for 12 non–governmental organizations and associations, receiving multiple international honors for his leadership. The author of four books Digital Prestige, Status Quo, Polisopolis, and Overestimation and more than 80 articles, Us lectures on marketing and art, and presides over the Experimental Art Collective USA. A former Senior Curator of the Museum of Science Fiction, his artworks have been showcased in over 160 exhibitions across 27 countries, including 15 solo shows.

Conceptual Artist Erhan Us’s "Infidel" Exhibition Targets Religious Propaganda in Public Spaces

Los Angeles, CA — May 27, 2026 / "Infidel", a solo exhibition by conceptual artist and writer Erhan Us, will be on view from June 1 to June 15, 2026, at the Center for  Inquiry  West building,  hosted by Atheists

United. In this provocative body of work, Us radically reconstructs the religious propaganda signs that occupy American highways and public spaces. The exhibition will celebrate its opening with a public reception on Sunday, June 7, from 5 to 8 PM, and will include free wine and snacks.
