SMART Recovery® (Self Management And Recovery Training) helps individuals gain independence from addictive substances and activities.

Welcome to our community! Our discussions are based on scientific knowledge and evolve as scientific knowledge evolves. SMART is helpful for some participants primarily because they become involved with a new community of helpful and friendly people. For others, SMART is helpful primarily because they learn new ways of thinking about themselves and their behavior.

Although we have science-based ideas for you to consider, no one will tell you what to do. Our slogan is “Discover the Power of Choice.” For many SMART is a combination of new community and new ways of thinking. You can be involved with SMART in whatever way you want to. We look forward to your participation.

San Fernando Valley Meetup (Online)

YOU MUST REGISTER ON MEETUP IN ADVANCE TO BE ADMITTED TO THE ZOOM MEETING.

Our Meetup is hosted every 1st Monday and 3rd Thursday evening of the month (3rd Thursday in person and 1st Monday on Zoom). All are welcome!

🛑What to expect:

Discussion sparked by short videos about atheism, religion, science, current events, critical thinking, comedy, life hacks, health, and beyond >>> followed by moderated discussions.

🛑Meeting format:

This is a place for atheists to meet, have dinner with each other (eating on camera is ok), and network with fellow atheists, skeptics, and humanists.

A few agnostics and religious people sometimes show up and participate and they are welcome as long as they leave the dogma and proselytizing at home.

We mandate courtesy and respect to fellow attendees. First and foremost, this is a social gathering and support group for like-minded persons, not a debate club. If you're coming just to argue on matters of religion or politics, don't bother showing up, you're not going to convert anyone, and you will be asked to leave.

🛑Details:

This is a 2-hour event, but often we go overtime when the discussion and the great atmosphere it requires; or when we can't get enough of seeing familiar faces and perhaps some new ones. Feel free to stay as long or as short as you'd like.

Look out for topics posted in the discussion section and please place your own ideas, questions, or concerns in the comments and please feel free to private message any of our co-organizers by clicking on their names.

We welcome your unique point of view and add to the discussion.

Leo Igwe — Why Critical Thinking Matters in Africa

Join us for a presentation by internationally renowned Humanist activist, Leo Igwe!

Critical thinking is necessary for growth, development and enlightenment in Africa. To combat religious extremism, ignorance, and superstition-based abuses, it is important to foster these cognitive skills in African schools.

Leo Igwe‘s organization, Critical Thinking Social Empowerment Foundation, is leading efforts to promote critical thinking skills in schools. It is campaigning for the introduction of the subject of critical thinking in primary and secondary schools. In his presentation he will discuss what they are doing at the moment, the progress that they have made and what you could do to support this initiative. For more information, visit:

Leo Igwe is a board member of the Humanist Association of Nigeria and Humanists International. He holds a doctoral degree in religious studies from the University of Bayreuth in Germany and wrote his doctoral thesis on witchcraft accusations in Northern Ghana. Igwe directs the Advocacy for Alleged Witches, and Critical Thinking Social Empowerment Foundation.

The event will be hosted by Center for Inquiry West with Atheists United as a co-sponsor.

This meetup is being scheduled for every second Sunday (of the month) at 10 am. It's scheduled for two hours to allow people to come and go as they wish.

Let’s get together and talk about important secular issues that affect our community. What do you care about? Let’s chat!

This event aims to get to know the Secular Latinx community of the San Gabriel Valley. This group is an excellent opportunity to connect with other Secular Latinx in the SGV! If you are an atheist/secular/freethinker/agnostic/skeptic/humanist, a questioning Latinx, or just a curious Latinx, come on out and meet others like you.

RSVP is not required but encouraged.

This meetup respects family dynamics and will respect your privacy. Photographs of you will not be taken and posted in this group without your consent.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

Sincerely,
Arlene

Our event will take place at Heretic House, one of Angelino Heights unforgettable victorian mansions. Free street parking available. Must be vaccinated to attend.

San Fernando Valley Meetup (Online)

YOU MUST REGISTER ON MEETUP, IN ADVANCE, TO BE ADMITTED TO THE ZOOM MEETING.

Together We Scan: Help Digitize Atheists United’s History

We need your help!

Atheists United is trying to preserve its history and needs help digitizing over 40,000 documents, dozens of tapes, and boxes of floppy disks.

We're hosting this community scanning party to help speed up the process and offer a new opportunity for people to volunteer.

We'll be gathering in the Glendale Central Library's Makerspace. They have technology and equipment that can help us digitize our content, and space for up to a dozen of us to work at the same time.

If you have a laptop and scanner you can bring from home, bring it! We can use all the equipment we can get our hands on.

Developing this archive will help the atheist community learn and preserve its history. Future generations will thank you for this work.

Contact evan@atheistsunited.org with any questions.
