Atheist Adventure Itinerary Announced: Death Valley 2025
Atheists United is thrilled to announce the details for our 2025 Atheist Adventure!
From Wednesday, November 5th, to Monday, November 10th, 2025, we are returning to the majestic and astronomically stunning landscape of Death Valley National Park.
Join fellow atheists for up to five nights of community, unique hikes, breathtaking sunsets, and a special night of science under one of the world's darkest skies.
This is more than a camping trip—it's an opportunity to connect with nature, challenge yourself, and strengthen the atheist community while exploring one of the most unique places on Earth.
Adventure Itinerary Highlights
We’ve built an itinerary packed with geology, history, and incredible vistas.
Wednesday, Nov 5th — Early Arrival & Super Moon:
For those available to join us on our first night, you’ll enjoy campfire under the spectacle of a Super Full Moon!
Thursday, Nov 6th — The All Day Hike:
Our first major challenge is a 1.5 hour drive to the historic Wildrose Charcoal Kilns, followed by the strenuous, all-day Wildrose Peak Trail hike. This 8.4-mile trek offers a 2,200 ft elevation gain, rewarding those who reach the summit with a stunning 360-degree panorama of Death Valley and the Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountain Range.
Friday, Nov 7th — Badlands & Epic Vistas:
Experience the park’s dramatic geology with a "must-do" hike from Golden Canyon to Red Cathedral. The trail offers exciting badlands and minor scrambling before a final view point.
In the late afternoon, we’ll drive up to Dante’s View for a stunning sunset view.
Saturday, Nov 8th — Slot canyons, Sand Dunes, and Cosmic Science:
Our day starts with our group photo and play time at the iconic Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes.
Then, we’ll explore the polished marble walls of Mosaic Canyon, a perfect hike for adventure-seekers and geology lovers with its winding narrows.
The night culminates with a special science talk on the History of Women in Astronomy in our campsite led by The Astro Ranger, Kristin Hendershoter.
Sunday, Nov 9th — Choose Your Own Adventure:
Embodying one of our core atheist values—Freedom—Sunday offers an array of optional activities. Explore the eerie Rhyolite Ghost Town, hike near the historic Keane Wonder Mine, or tackle the difficult Corkscrew Peak.
The evening is reserved for stargazing under Death Valley’s famously clear, dark skies.
Important Notes for a Memorable Trip
Due to recent flooding, iconic sites like Badwater Basin and Artists Pallet are currently inaccessible. This forced us to craft a totally new itinerary from our last trip to Death Valley that promises to make this one of the most unique and memorable Atheist Adventures yet!
While we have a robust suggested itinerary, there is absolutely no pressure to participate in every activity. Feel free to skip a hike, explore a museum, or just relax at our group sites (Group Sites #2 & #3 at Furnace Creek Campground). We encourage you to seek out the adventure that is right for you.
Logistics & Community:
Carpooling is Highly Recommended!
Death Valley is massive, and we will be driving to all locations. Carpooling saves gas and helps build community.
Meals:
You are expected to prepare or purchase all of your own meals. There are limited restaurant and general store options in Furnace Creek and Stovepipe Wells. Plan accordingly!
Government Shutdown:
Our campground will remain open. However, due to the government shutdown, expect the Visitor Center to be closed and public safety/cleaning staff to be limited, meaning public restrooms may be dirtier than usual.
Don't miss out on this incredible opportunity for community and adventure in the spectacular American West!
