Conceptual Artist Erhan Us’s "Infidel" Exhibition Targets Religious Propaganda in Public Spaces
Los Angeles, CA — May 27, 2026 / "Infidel", a solo exhibition by conceptual artist and writer Erhan Us, will be on view from June 1 to June 15, 2026, at the Center for Inquiry West building, hosted by Atheists
United. In this provocative body of work, Us radically reconstructs the religious propaganda signs that occupy American highways and public spaces. The exhibition will celebrate its opening with a public reception on Sunday, June 7, from 5 to 8 PM, and will include free wine and snacks.
From Propaganda to Proof: The Occupation of Public Space
"Infidel" focuses on the unauthorized intrusion into the social sphere by tens of thousands of religious propaganda signs, predominantly Christ–centric, posted on US highways, overpasses, and telephone poles. Erhan Us defines these metal and plastic placards not merely as expressions of faith, but as ideological attempts to seize public space; gears in a larger propaganda machine that normalizes religious authority through constant repetition.
The works in the exhibition were made possible through the direct interventions of the Atheist Street Pirates, a civil and secular counter–offensive initiative founded in 2021 under the umbrella of Atheists United in Los Angeles. By removing over 6,000 of these signs from public streets and donating hundreds to the artist, the group provided the raw material to transform propaganda into a contemporary art project.
Featuring the original signs alongside their manipulated counterparts, the installations challenge viewers to move back and forth along the axis of belief and disbelief, questioning what is real. The exhibition prompts critical inquiries: Who shapes our public spaces? Which messages are permitted to occupy them, and who do these spaces truly belong to?
The artist summarizes the core philosophy of the project in his exhibition text: "These remnants are no longer tools of propaganda. They are now evidence. They are the physical traces, torn from public spaces, of how those guided by religion view themselves as superior to the rest of society. For if spaces belong to whichever ideology screams the loudest, the demagogues and manipulators will always win."

Atheist Street Pirate Los Angeles Sign Hunt
Join our Atheists Street Pirates of Los Angeles as they set sail to plunder illegal religious signage, together.
Atheist Street Pirates was founded in 2021 by Captain Evan Clark as a way to track illegal and unwelcome religious propaganda around LA's streets, bridges, and telephone poles. Since its inception, it has received international media attention and attracted dozens of dedicated volunteers from across the United States to its mission.
On December 17th you have the rare opportunity to join a team of local street pirates for a group hunt near downtown Los Angeles. Together we'll try and take down over 10 signs in defense of the land laws protecting the separation of ship and state.
After the hunt, we'll find a local establishment to share a feast.
Volunteers must bring with them proper street sailing attire (sneakers and sunglasses) and should dress for the weather. Masks and pirate attire are encouraged as we'll be carpooling around town together.
First-timers welcome. Must RSVP to attend. Safety vests and gloves will be provided.
Free parking at the Center for Inquiry West building in the back lot. Email questions to Evan@atheistsunited.org
