Awardees announced for 2025 Lorraine Hansberry Humanist Scholarship

Atheists United and Black Skeptics LA are proud to announce the recipients of the 2025 Lorraine Hansberry Humanist (LHH) Scholarship Awardees: Esther Abraham and Kimberly Ortiz!

Each year, our organizations partner to give up to $500 to South Los Angeles students who challenge racism, sexism, homophobia, and injustice in their schools and communities.

This award is available to alumni of Women’s Leadership Project and their Young Male Scholars program.

Esther Abraham (UCLA Class of 2028) is an 18 year-old double-majoring in Neuroscience and Psychology. She’s facilitated rallies for missing and murdered women, spoken on podcasts, attended LGBTQ+ events, interned with #Standing4BlackGirls and taught 9th-grade classes on relationships, mental health, and human trafficking.

Kimberly Ortiz is a 20 year-old Cal State LA student majoring in Criminal Justice and Chicano(a) Latino(a) Studies. She’s pursuing Family Law to become an attorney and protect the rights of others. She’s facilitated events like the LGBTQIA+ Institute, advocated for safe spaces, and took part in the #Standing4BlackGirls Task Force.

You can more about both on Women’s Leadership Project’s site.

Named for Black queer playwright and freethinker Lorraine Hansberry, we’re able to contribute to the scholarship fund every year thanks to the tax-deductible donations of Atheists United supporters… like you.
