Science Sunday x LA River Kayak Safari: Trip Report & Photos

Atheists United Science Sunday group paddles down the LA River in kayaks provided by LA River Kayak Safari

Once again, our Science Sunday field trip program brought thrills and spills to our community, in the best of ways!

13 Atheists United community members got together for our second trip down the LA River with LA River Kayak Safari!

LA River Kayak Safari takes visitors on educational eco-tours that highlight how the river was formed, how it’s changing, and its surprising biodiversity.

The river has seen more active restoration, habitat improvement, and infrastructure project since our first visit in 2024.

After a 10 minute moderate Schwinn bike ride down the river path (bikes provided as part of the tour), we learned how various natural and man-made objects accumulated to form different ecological zones of the river.

The water was a refreshing temperature, we saw beautiful waterfoul including ducks and herons, and bonded over some navigating some mild rapids. Thankfully the friendly Kayak Safari team was there to help us around the trickier bends. They said we got to the end of the course faster than any group they’ve taken!

Afterwards, we got to know one another better over a group lunch at Spoke Bicycle Café. Everyone came away smiling, new connections were made, and a few attendees even hatched plans for future volunteering.

Our next science outing is our Atheist Adventure in Death Valley November 6-10!

Including staff time, booking costs, and more it costs us $7,967 annually to offer the Science Sunday program. (Low ticket prices for members means program income covers about a quarter of that.)

We make things so affordable because our mission is to build thriving atheist communities, and events like this are where we do it!

We appreciate our donors like you who make this all possible!
